I paved a section of the road to hell with my good intentions this week, but did not get anything written about the latest outbreak of the concealed carry virus, which seems to have infected Milwaukee DA John Chisholm and Police Chief Ed Flynn.
The dynamic duo suggested they would be willing to trade concealed carry for other gun law reforms. In other words, at the same time we'd pass some laws that would save some lives, we'd put more guns on the street.
Terrible idea, for a lot of reasons. Wisconsin should be proud to be one of only two states with enough common sense and backbone to stand up to the gun lobby and ban concealed carry.
More on this next week, but in the meantime the Shepherd Express has come through in a double-barreled way today, with a column by Joel McNally, Shooting down guns laws, and an interview with author Joshua Horwitz on Using the 2nd Amendment to attack democracy. Both well worth a read. Horwitz will be in Milwaukee Thursday night. (So will McNally, I suppose, but he lives here, Horwitz is coming for a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort.
In 2006, Governor Doyle himself spoke in FAVOR of Open Carry. The people of the state of Wisconsin have had the right to Open Carry since BEFORE Wisconsin was a state.
Just like the Homosexuals and the African Americans before them, those who choose to carry are demanding their rights and an end to their persecution.

In my hometown in rural upstate New York, weekend visitors from NYC come to relax and unwind - and get away from the stress and crime of their daily lives. Why do you think they come here, yet few of us go there? Could it be the same conservative rural culture that allows us to not only leave our front doors unlocked, but also carry firearms (openly or concealed) legally?
Open Carry is already legal, we don't need anything else.
We will overturn the vehicle and school zone restrictions and continue to open carry. In a few years, when the "panic" is over, then we'll get no permit concealed carry. They'll just repeal the concealed carry ban.
Open carry has the "moral high ground" and will will not compromise it away.
"heroin or a hand gun?". ever live next to a drug house, ever have your person or your loved ones threaten by someone strung out waiting to make a buy?. Ever pray that the chain holding the drug dealer's dog doesn't break? Ever call a cop to protect you from druggies only to wait 30 minutes. i have. The State constitution already allows for defending ones self using a gun. the Wis. supreme court already found the current concealed weapon law, unconstitutional and recommended that the Legislature correct it so that the court would not have to decide on a case by case basis. Wouldn't that method favor the rich? Gun lobby? Would that be where a person, robbed by a criminal at gun point, is forced to go for protection? I think first the State should disarm criminals, then talk about disarming law abiding citizens. An easy way might be to throw them back in jail instead of just a misdemeanor. Call for a cop, call for an ambulance, call for a pizza, who gets their first? when a criminal threatens you and no one comes to your rescue, maybe that's when you join the gun lobby? yes, it's so much easier to live in a low crime neighborhood, it's nice if you can afford it. but please don't pretend that your laws and values work in my neighborhood.
On Wednesday, I went to the Milw County DA's web site and sent the following email:
John,
NO, no no to concealed carry. There is no reason to acquiesce to the gun lobby. Hand guns have no purpose other than to take a life. They should be declared contraband, not promoted. What's more dangerous, heroin or a hand gun?
There has been a well organized campaign to paint second hand smoke as a public health issue. That's how the anti-smoking group gained their victories over freedom of choice. I'm convinced that exposure to second hand smoke is not as harmful to my health as exposure to a hand gun. It takes years of exposure to a smoker to be affected. It takes an instant of exposure to a hand gun to die.
Just as the anti-smoking forces created an issue of public health about second hand smoke, there must be a focus on hand guns as an issue of public health.
I worked for Mike McCann for six years. I voted for you based on his endorsement. I'm beginning to feel that he and I may have been wrong.
